Exiled is an adapted and shorter version of Exiles, Joyce’s only play originally written in 1914/15. Joyce described his play, set in Dublin in the summer of 1912, as three “cat and mouse” acts. This new adaptation, by Gerard Dalton, is set in Dublin 2018.
It concentrates on the intriguing relationship between the three main characters: Richard Rowan, Bertha and Robert Hand. Written after the completion of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and just before beginning Ulysses, Exiles has rarely been performed and explored. This adaptation will shed renewed light on one of Joyce’s most overlooked works.
EXILED will also be performed in the Mill Theatre Studio, Dundrum 6-9 June.
