Ghost Signs of Ulysses

I Love Terenure invites you to Terenure Library for an engaging lecture by Dublin City Council Culture Company Historian in Residence Antonia Hart on Thursday, 18th June at 11am.

James Joyce had a special connection with Terenure. Joyce was born nearby at 41 Brighton Square in Rathgar on 2nd February 1882, and was baptised at St. Joseph’s Church. His mother, Mary Jane (May) Murray, was born 90 metres from the church at Terenure Cross in 1859 in the pub owned by her father, John Murray, called The Eagle House, Terenure.

Stories of some of the well-known businesses encountered in Ulysses, whose signs still dot the city of Dublin today. The talk is accompanied by Lynn Nalty‘s gorgeous photography from the book Ghost Signs of Dublin, including the beautiful interior of Sweny, where you can still buy that ‘sweet lemony wax’, the glorious red brick Dolphin, and many more.
The event is free. No booking is required.
