Bloomsday in Belém
Bloomsday Belém is proud to present its annual Bloomsday celebration on Sunday, June 16th from 10am onwards at Travessia Livraria. Owner Pedro Gama (a writing and literature teacher) will open the house. Local editor Andrea Sanjad and Prof. Otávio Guimarães Tavares of Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) will welcome guests and kickoff readings.
The event will have readings of various of Joyce’s works in English and Portuguese by a diverse group of professors, students, writers, bookstore customers and local community members who wish to participate. Musician Anthony Epifanio de Carvalho will sing and play some of Joyce’s poems from Chamber Music. The event will conclude with a short talk and conversation on Joyce and Bloomsday.
Bloomsday Belém was founded in 2019 by Núcleo de Estudos em Literatura e Artes Anglófonas (NELAA) and Portal Ensaio. In 2022, Bloomsday Belém participated in a national activity organized by the Irish Embassy in Brazil, which led to the painting of a mural based on possible dialogues between Ulysses and Belém (in general, focusing on Dublin and Belém being river based cities).
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit Bloomsday Belém Instagram page.
