Bloomsday in Mexico City: The Vasconcelos Library
This June and early July, the Embassy of Ireland in Mexico, in collaboration with Biblioteca Vasconcelos and the Evan Boland-Anne Enright Irish Studies Chair UNAM, presents Bloomsday & Beyond: Celebrating Ireland, the Island of Writers — a series of events that highlight Irish storytelling across generations, languages, and forms. From academic lectures and exhibitions to musical performances, children’s workshops and a digital book giveaway, we invite everyone to discover the magic of Irish literature.

A literary afternoon for all ages, hosted in the heart of Mexico City’s most iconic library.
– Keynote Lecture by Prof. Greg Toner
Professor Toner, from Queen’s University Belfast and author of The History of Ireland in 100 Words, will share insights into Ireland’s linguistic and cultural past. The talk will be delivered in English with simultaneous Spanish translation.
– Opening of the Exhibition “The History of Ireland in 100 Words”
Official remarks by the Library Director and a representative of the Embassy of Ireland will mark the launch of this traveling exhibition, which brings Irish history and language to life in a unique and accessible way.
The exhibition will be open from the 14 June to 13 July 2025.
– Live Irish Music by Shamrock
Enjoy a traditional Irish music session to round out the day’s programme.

Throughout June, the Children’s Section of Biblioteca Vasconcelos will host interactive sessions inspired by Irish folklore, literature, and imagination.

Digital Book Giveaway
As part of the Bloomsday celebrations, the Embassy of Ireland is delighted to partner with UNAM and Biblioteca Vasconcelos for a digital book giveaway. A curated selection of works by contemporary Irish authors — including Sally Rooney, Anna Burns, and Lucy Caldwell — will be made available to readers in Mexico, helping to share the living voices of Irish literature today.
