Bloomsday in Pula

This year’s Bloomsday will be held over 3 days – from June 14 to 16. In addition to the Tourist Board of Pula and the City of Pula, the rich program includes the participation of the Pula Film Festival, the Pula City Library and Reading Room, the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, the Embassy of the Republic of Ireland, and the Caffe Bar Uliks.

The event will traditionally begin with the reading of excerpts from Ulysses on June 14 at 10 am in front of Caffe Bar Uliks. The excerpts will be read by students of English Studies at Juraj Dobrila University, along with the Irish ambassador.

It will continue with artistic expressions by students of the School of Applied Arts and Design – Joyce through the eyes of SPUD on the green couch at the Forum. Namely, this year the Forum will be given a new look for Ireland and Bloomsday.

The green couch (a couch made of grass) will decorate Pula’s city square Forum for several days, allowing visitors to rest in “our living room,” read an excerpt from Joyce’s ‘Ulysses,’ attend a classical music concert from the early 20th century on Friday evening at 8:30 pm, and taste cheeses praised by Joyce during his stay in Pula, accompanied by costumed animators.

For children and students of different ages, workshops and readings will be held at the City Library and Reading Room on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15.

On June 14, the film ‘Steps to Freedom’, which deals with the theme of Irish dance, will be shown at Kino Valli at 7 pm, and on June 15 at 10 am, the exhibition – Bloomsday through the years – will be opened at the Tourist Board of Pula, where Igor Jurilj, the initiator of Bloomsday in Croatia, will present all the posters for the Bloomsday event from 2012 to 2023.

On June 16, Bloomsday itself, everyone interested will gather in front of Portarata at 10 am to explore Pula following Joyce’s paths, with tours in Croatian, English, and Italian.

All pub quiz enthusiasts (and Joyce fans) can test their knowledge at the Caffe Bar ‘Uliks’ on Sunday evening (June 16 at 9 pm) in the company of the writer himself.
