Bloomsday in Salzburg
For almost 75 years, Salzburg has celebrated Irish author James Joyce on the day of his famous novel Ulysses, 16 June.
Translated from German:
Since the 1950s, Bloomsday has been celebrated on June 16th—a commemorative day honoring the protagonist of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses (which takes place on a single day: June 16, 1904). In Dublin, it holds the status of a public holiday, and globally, it is the only day dedicated to a book and its (anti)hero.
For many years, a constantly evolving collaborative project in Salzburg has brought literature and new music together on Bloomsday. This year, Austrian author and Joyce scholar Kurt Palm will read from his book *Der Brechreiz eines Hottentotten. Ein James-Joyce-Alphabet von Aal bis Zahl* (Löcker Verlag, 2003). The reading will be accompanied by compositions from Klaus Ager, Amr Okba, and Agustin Castilla-Avila, performed for the first time by the Gunnar Berg Ensemble Salzburg. Hosted by Tomas Friedmann.
Ulysses is James Joyce’s magnum opus, in which Leopold Bloom wanders through Dublin across 18 episodes—modeled on Homer’s Odyssey. The novel was published on the author’s 40th birthday by Sylvia Beach, owner of the Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris (though passages deemed obscene were omitted). The first German translation was published in 1927.
