Bloomsday in Wheeling, West Virginia

Join Joyceans in the Mountain State for Bloomsday in Wheeling, West Virginia!

The Ohio Country Public Library on 52-16th Street is delighted to host Dr. Patrick Hastings (curator of the website www.ulyssesguide.com and author of the book, The Guide to James Joyce’s Ulysses), who will lead a virtual tour of 1904 Dublin Ireland in Leopold Bloom’s footsteps. He will also lead a discussion of Ulysses as the capstone of a reading group, started in February, called “Wheeling Reads Ulysses.” Local readers will participate in the discussion.

This event will also feature 1904 historic clothing and dress, through local costuming company Stages.

Period food inspired by the novel — only not quite so severe — and prepared by local Chef Melissa Rebholz – Midge’s Kitchen:

Marinated Mushrooms with garlic and herbs
Irish Soda Bread with an English Pea & Mint “hummus”
Deviled Eggs with Crab
Caramelized Onion and Gorgonzola Grilled Cheese
Caramel Pudding

Period music performed by local group Faire May, a traditional music band specializing in enjoyable folk music from the near and distant. https://www.facebook.com/fairemay

Dramatic readings from the novel presented by:
West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman
Actor Michelle Duffy
Actor Brigitte Mazure
Actor Jamie Hamilton
Attorney Patrick Cassidy

A James Joyce look-alike contest. There will also be a talk, presented by a local historian, on Wheeling in 1904 as well as a talk on the city’s reaction to the publication of the novel in 1922.

The event will be livestreamed on facebook and YouTube. For more information, visit their Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/402044805637849.

Patrick is the English Department Chair at Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland. A graduate of Washington & Lee University (2005) and Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English (2012), Patrick has studied, written about, taught, and conducted research into Joyce and Ulysses since 2003, when he lived and worked at Shakespeare and Company Bookstore on the Left Bank of Paris (the current iteration of the literary institution that first published Ulysses in 1922). He had some of his work published in the James Joyce Quarterly in 2015.

The event is free.
